What Vedic astrology is
Vedic astrology describes the sky at birth on the sidereal zodiac. Nine grahas sit in twelve bhavas; 27 nakshatras cut the ecliptic more finely. The Lagna is the sidereal ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon. You read houses, dignity and dasha stages, not what happens on a given day.
What is on the chart
Lagna and the twelve bhavas
The Lagna — the point where the sidereal ecliptic crosses the eastern horizon — anchors everything: it moves about 1′ per second, so four minutes of clock error can shift every bhava. Bhavas are whole-sign (Rashi = Bhava): the rising sign is the 1st bhava, 30° each, with no separate cusps, each with its lord and where that lord sits.
Nine grahas and dignity
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu — each with sign, degree, house, nakshatra and pada, one of six dignity levels, and retrograde state.
Nakshatras and padas
The zodiac divides into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each with four padas of 3°20′. The Moon’s nakshatra fixes the starting lord of the Vimshottari dasha.
Vimshottari dasha
Nine lords cycle through 120 years. The first period is only the balance left at birth, and every period subdivides into nine sub-periods by the same proportions — all start and end dates appear on the chart.
Varga charts and panchanga
The Varga charts — the divisional charts D3, D7, D9, D10, D12 and D30 — re-divide the same longitude under different rules; panchanga gives the day-level tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana, with the weekday starting at local sunrise.
How the chart is cast
1.Restore the birth instant
Local clock time is converted to UT using the historical timezone and DST rules. No true solar time: the Lagna comes straight from the UT instant and the coordinates.
2.Take sidereal longitudes
Compute apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude (aberration and nutation included), then subtract that day’s ayanamsa. Lahiri is the default. Rahu uses the mean node; Ketu is Rahu + 180°. Switching ayanamsa moves the whole chart.
3.Fix the Lagna and the bhavas
The Lagna comes from the standard equatorial formula and is reduced by the same ayanamsa; the twelve bhavas then run in whole signs from the rising sign.
4.Derive the layers
Nakshatras and padas, dignity, the Varga charts, Vimshottari dasha and panchanga are all table lookups and arithmetic.
5.Charting and reading
The chart first computes the Lagna, grahas, nakshatras and dasha. The AI reading only explains those already-calculated fields: it does not invent a missing birth time or change the ayanamsa.
Chart timezone: local clock time is restored to a UT instant using the historical offset (Asia/Shanghai by default for births in mainland China), including the 1986–1991 DST years. Vedic astrology does not apply true solar time.

- Why do two programs give different signs for the same birth?
- Because there is more than one ayanamsa. Lahiri and Raman differ by about 1.45°, Lahiri and KP by about 0.1°. This tool defaults to Lahiri (the official Indian ayanamsa) and prints the value it used, so you can reconcile it with any other program.
- What is the difference between the chart and the AI reading?
- The chart computes the Lagna, grahas, nakshatras and dasha from the chosen ayanamsa; the same input always matches. The AI reading only explains those already-calculated fields: it does not invent a missing birth time or change the ayanamsa. If the fields do not match, compare the chart first.
