A channel needs both gates
The 64 gates are fixed. One set of activations turns some of them on. The channel between two gates exists only when both of those gates are present.

One end is not enough
A single gate is hanging. It sits in a center, does not define the center, and does not create the channel a type needs.
Both sets of activations count
Personality and design gates are laid on the same chart. Whichever set they come from, the channel exists when both ends are on.
One missing gate leaves the line off
Illustration: gate 34 is on and gate 20 is off. The 34-20 channel is not formed. Do not draw it because a verse remembers the pair.
Common mistakes
- Reciting the channel list instead of reading the chart.
- Counting one gate as half a channel.
- Copying a connecting gate from a relationship chart back onto the natal chart.

There is no score. Formed only means both ends are present.
What if one center has several channels?
Check both ends of each. More channels mean the center is defined by more lines, not a doubled rank.
Do the lines of a gate belong in the channel?
A channel cares whether the gates are on. Lines are used more on the profile page, for the Sun. A line is not the switch of a channel.
