A center among the nine is defined only when a complete channel reaches it. A single gate can hang in a center and light a corner. It does not define the center.

How a channel turns on

A channel needs both gates

The 64 gates are fixed. One set of activations turns some of them on. The channel between two gates exists only when both of those gates are present.

Count complete channels first

Both gates have to be present. After that, see which centers are defined. Colors and the list are what the chart prints.

Undefined is not broken

A center with no channel, in the traditional reading, takes in that kind of signal from outside more readily. That is structure, not a defect.

One channel defines two centers

Illustration: both ends of a channel are on, so the two centers it joins are defined. A neighboring center with only one gate stays undefined. Do not add the hanging gate to the channel count.

Common mistakes

  • Writing a hanging gate as a channel.
  • Writing an undefined center as missing.
  • Adding a gate from memory.

Is it better when all nine centers are defined?

It is not better or worse. More definition only means more centers are connected by one’s own channels.

What is the unit, a channel or a gate?

A gate is one end. Type and definition use channels.

Whose channel is the one in a connection chart?

If one person holds the whole channel, it stays on that natal chart. A channel that exists only when the two charts combine is written only on the connection chart.
