A center among the nine is defined only when a complete channel reaches it. A single gate can hang in a center and light a corner. It does not define the center.

Count complete channels before coloring a center
A channel needs both gates. After the channels are counted, you see which centers are defined. Reverse the order and the type follows the mistake: a hanging gate gets treated as a stable definition. Colors and the channel list are what the chart prints. Do not add a gate from memory.
Undefined is not broken
A center with no channel, in the traditional reading, takes in that kind of signal from outside more readily. That is structure, not a defect. Do not write a blank center as a part that needs repair. A connection chart is where someone else’s gate may meet your hanging gate. That meeting belongs to two charts. It does not grow a channel on the natal chart.
How to write a hanging gate
Illustration: one gate in the Throat is on, and no channel reaches it. Write: the Throat has a hanging gate, and the center is undefined. It is not “the expression center is defined,” and it is not “this person should not speak.” If a connection chart shows the other person holding the far gate, say the fit belongs to the two charts together, not to this natal chart’s own channel.

Is it better when all nine centers are defined?
It is not better or worse. More definition means more centers are connected by one’s own channels. Undefined is another structure, not a deduction.
What is the unit, a channel or a gate?
A gate is one end. A channel is the line with both ends present. Type and definition use channels, not a count of single gates.
Whose channel is the one in a connection chart?
If one person holds the whole channel, it stays on that person’s natal chart. A channel that exists only when the two charts are combined is written on the connection chart, not copied back onto either natal chart.
