A self-transformation is a star carrying a further change inside its own palace. A flying transformation leaves one palace and lands in another. Both sit a step past the natal four. A flight the engine did not mark cannot be pencilled in.

Self-transformation stays in the palace

Nothing changes cells. The star in this palace adds lu, quan, ke, or ji to its own matter. You still name the major star and the palace, then say what the cell transforms on itself. Without the mark, do not grow a second layer out of the year-stem table.

A flight needs a palace it leaves and a palace it enters

Flying opens the talk from one palace to the pull between palaces. The sentence needs a start and a landing, such as “ji flies from Career into Wealth,” and only when the chart actually marks that line. Drop either end and the flight is a line you cannot point at. The wider the range, the less it can be chained into one concrete event.

Stopping when the mark is absent

Illustration: a chart prints the natal four and prints neither self-transformation nor a flight. The reading stops at “this star carries this change in this palace,” plus the trine and the opposite. Do not paste arrows from a flying table of unknown origin. A chart can still be read from the natal stars and the natal four. A flown line is also not a medical, legal, or financial cause.

Common mistakes

  • Drawing a flight the engine never marked.
  • Saying “it flies” without a starting palace and a landing palace.
  • Chaining flights into one specific event.

Can I read Zi Wei without flying transformations?

Yes. Natal transformations, palaces, major stars, and san fang si zheng already support a bounded reading.

Natal ji and a self-transformation in the same place: which counts?

Write both, and label one as natal and one as the palace’s own. Do not merge them into a “double ji.”

Can a flight land somewhere other than the opposite palace?

It can, when the chart marks it. No mark, no line, whatever a verse says the flight should do.
