Retrograde is read from daily motion
Seen from Earth, a planet sometimes appears to step backward on the ecliptic. Write retrograde only when the chart’s daily motion is negative.

Negative speed is retrograde
Positive speed is direct. Near zero is slow, not automatically retrograde. Do not replace the printed speed with a memorised ephemeris.
Retrograde does not change the sign
Mars in Aries with negative speed is still Mars in Aries, stepping backward at that moment. Sign, house, and direction all stay in the sentence.
How to say Mercury retrograde
Illustration: Mercury is in Gemini, speed negative, in the third house. Write Mercury in Gemini, third house, retrograde. It is not “communication stops” or “sign nothing.”
Common mistakes
- Calling Mercury retrograde whenever it appears.
- Turning retrograde into a ban on action.
- Guessing direction when speed was not printed.

Frequently asked questions
Can the Sun be retrograde?
Use the daily motion on the natal chart. The Sun and Moon are not usually marked retrograde the way planets are. Follow whether a negative speed is printed.
Is a retrograde planet more important?
It is not more important. It only adds a direction. Sign and house still get written.
What about retrograde in synastry?
Read each natal chart’s own speed. Synastry does not invent a second retrograde rule.
