Planets and the four angles
A Western natal chart starts with planets on the ecliptic, then the four angles cut by the birthplace and the clock. The sun sign is only the Sun. It is not the chart.

Planets sit on the ecliptic, angles on the local sky
The natal set is Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. A sign is a position on the ecliptic. Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, and Imum Coeli are four angles set by the clock and the coordinates. They are not four extra planets. Without a birthplace, or with a date and no clock, the Ascendant cannot be calculated.
This chart uses the tropical zodiac
The Western chart defaults to the tropical zodiac, with 0 Aries at the equinox. A Vedic chart uses the sidereal zodiac. The same birth can sit nearly a sign apart. Say which is tropical and which is sidereal before you talk about the gap. The four angles are also not Zi Wei’s four transformations.
Sun in Leo, Ascendant in Libra
Illustration: the chart prints the Sun in Leo and the Ascendant in Libra. The Sun is a point on the ecliptic. The Ascendant is the degree on the eastern horizon at birth. Keep both sentences. Leo is not the whole person, and a Libra Ascendant is not a second personality that replaces the Sun. This is not a medical or legal identity. If the time or place is missing, do not write the Ascendant sentence.

- Letting the sun sign stand in for the whole chart.
- Writing an Ascendant without a birthplace.
- Treating the four angles as Zi Wei’s four transformations.

Which is the real self, the Ascendant or the Sun?
Both are positions. The Sun is an ecliptic point. The Ascendant is a horizon angle. Neither one equals a person.
What if the birth time is unknown?
Signs of the planets may still follow from the date. The Ascendant and the houses stop. Do not estimate a clock time to fill the angles.
Is the Midheaven the tenth house?
In common house systems it starts the tenth house. If the house system changes, read what the chart prints. Do not copy house numbers from memory.
