Five ways of meeting

Guest produces host, host produces guest, guest controls host, host controls guest, or they match. Say which trigram is the host. Guest producing host is not already successful.

Read the primary, nuclear, and changed hexagrams together

The nuclear hexagram comes from the inner four lines. The changed one follows the moving line. Do not announce an outcome from the changed hexagram’s element alone.

The guest produces the host

Illustration: the lower trigram is the host, the upper is the guest, and the guest’s element produces the host. Write that the side meeting the question is producing the asker’s side. If the moving line shifts to the lower trigram, host and guest can swap, so check where the line sits first.

Common mistakes

  • Hearing guest-produces-host as already won.
  • Reading only the changed hexagram’s element.
  • Turning generation and control into a cause of illness.

Is the host always the lower trigram?

No. The host is the trigram without the moving line.
