The useful god is the line that stands for this question. Shi is the asker’s side. Ying is the other side, or the matter’s side. Until the useful god is named, “lucky” has no subject.

Name the kind of question first

A question about work, an object, or another person traditionally points at different lines. Say which kind it is, then find that line in the hexagram already cast. The wrong line attaches every later relation to the wrong matter. This useful god is not the BaZi useful god. The words do not transfer.

Shi and ying are the two sides

Shi marks the asker’s side. Ying marks the other party, or the matter. They are positions, not two people’s names. A strong shi line means that side’s condition has more force. It does not mean the question is already solved. Najia loads stems and branches onto the lines. Relations are discussed after that load, not before.

Naming the useful god in one sentence

Illustration: the question is whether an object already sent will come back. The useful god is the line that kind of question takes. Shi is on line three, ying on line six. Write: the useful god is that line, shi is three, ying is six, and only then do generation and control have a subject. It is not “shi is strong, so the person wins.” This is also not a legal verdict. If the useful god does not match the question, change the classification of the question. Do not move the line to fit a conclusion.

Common mistakes

  • Calling the cast lucky before the useful god is named.
  • Treating shi as the asker’s name.
  • Using the Liu Yao useful god as if it were the BaZi one.

Frequently asked questions

Does shi always mean me?

It is the position of the asker’s side. If the question is not about you, start from the useful god. Do not make shi the hero of every cast.

When is najia done?

After the hexagram is stacked and before generation and control. Without stems and branches there is no element to relate.

Does a strong ying mean the other side is ahead?

It means that side’s condition has more force. Whether anyone is ahead still depends on the useful god and the moving lines. Do not stop on the word “strong.”
