Which branches are marked void

Void marks the two branches that have no stem partner inside the day pillar’s ten-day cycle. It is a traditional empty seat for those branches in that cycle. It does not erase the branch from the chart.

Find the day pillar’s cycle first

The sixty pairs are grouped in tens. Each group leaves two branches out, and those two are void for that cycle. Change the day pillar and the cycle can change, taking the two void branches with it. The day-boundary switch can therefore move void.

A void branch is still read

The ten god and the hidden stems remain. Tradition says the branch is thinner and lands less readily. Write: this branch holds this ten god, and it also sits in void. Do not write that the domain does not exist.

When the hour branch is void

Illustration: the voids of the day pillar include the hour branch. The hour’s main qi is still weighted into a ten god, and you add half a sentence: this branch sits in the void of the day pillar’s cycle. It is not “the hour pillar is useless, so later life can be skipped.”

  • Deleting the void character.
  • Memorising a void pair without the day pillar.
  • Turning void into a medical emptiness.

Is a void year branch more serious than a void hour branch?

There is no seriousness rank. Both say the branch sits in the day cycle’s empty seat. Different pillars are written as different pillars.

Can a luck-cycle branch be void?

Void is fixed by the day pillar’s cycle, and you can ask whether the cycle’s branch lands on it. If it does, say so. Do not invent a second void system.

Can void be filled?

Tradition has a filling rule. This page only asks you to mark the two void branches the chart prints. Do not add a filling the chart did not print.
