Which branches are marked void
Void marks the two branches that have no stem partner inside the day pillar’s ten-day cycle. It is a traditional empty seat for those branches in that cycle. It does not erase the branch from the chart.

The twelve stages are station names
The twelve stages give a stem a traditional station on each branch: birth, bath, capping, officer, peak, decline, sickness, death, tomb, extinction, conception, and nurture. The station is not a lifespan and not an illness.

Nayin is the paired sound of a pillar
Nayin gives each stem-branch pair a traditional name, such as metal in the sea for one pillar. It is an old label for that pair. It is not a second set of elements, and it does not assign a trade by itself.

The pillars come first
Void depends on which ten-day cycle holds the day pillar. The twelve stages ask which station a stem has reached among the twelve branches. Nayin is the traditional paired sound of a stem and branch. All three assume the pillars are already cast.
The marks sit below the day master and the ten gods
If a mark disagrees with a ten god, keep the day master, the ten god, and the weights, and leave the mark as a supplement. Do not let one void or one nayin overturn a pillar.
The three can appear together
Illustration: the day pillar falls in a certain cycle and the hour branch is marked void; the day master reaches “sickness” on the month branch; the year pillar prints a nayin name. Write three sentences. Do not merge them into “the hour is empty, the body is weak, and the year assigned a job.”
Common mistakes
- Reading void as a character that does not exist.
- Reading the stage names death and extinction as a lifespan.
- Turning nayin into a trade already assigned.

Does every chart print all three?

Do they outrank the ten gods?
Ten gods and weights come first. These three are marks.
Can I just memorise the nayin song?
The verse helps you look a pair up. On a chart you still say which stem-branch pair carries which sound.
