The Vedic chart uses the sidereal zodiac. The ayanamsa is about 24 degrees, so the same birth can sit nearly a sign away from a tropical chart. A nakshatra is a finer slice of the Moon’s path, one of 27.

Where sidereal and tropical diverge
The tropical zodiac pins 0 Aries to the equinox. The sidereal zodiac is measured against the stars. The gap is the ayanamsa, about 24 degrees at present. The Sun at one moment can fall in neighboring signs on the two charts. Say which chart is sidereal and which is tropical before you compare them. Do not copy a tropical sun sign into a Vedic sign.
A nakshatra is the Moon’s smaller segment
The ecliptic is also split into 27 nakshatras. Which one holds the Moon is a calculated position. A nakshatra is not a Western sign under another name, and it is not a lucky number. Lagna, the nine grahas, and the nakshatra degrees are one layer. Traditional meanings are a second layer and cannot be used to edit the degrees.
Saying the one-sign gap out loud
Illustration: the tropical Sun is late in Aries. With a gap of about 24 degrees, the sidereal Sun falls in Pisces. Both sentences hold, because the starting point of the zodiac differs. Write: tropical Sun in Aries, sidereal Sun in Pisces, ayanamsa about 24 degrees. Do not argue which one is the real sun sign. If the chart prints a nakshatra on the Moon, name that nakshatra in its own sentence.

How do the 27 nakshatras sit with the 12 signs?
Signs are twelve sectors, nakshatras twenty-seven. The Moon has a sign and, inside that, one nakshatra. Write both layers.
Without a birth time, can lagna and nakshatra still be filled in?
Lagna needs the clock and the place. The Moon’s position is sensitive to the clock as well. If the time is missing, do not invent a lagna or a nakshatra.
