The lead star and the lead door
The lead star heads this board and the lead door heads the doors. A reading starts by finding which palaces they occupy. They are not the names of two spirits, and they are not an order to act.

Find the palaces of the lead star and the lead door
Each board has one lead star and one lead door. Both move with the board. Find those two cells first, then the door and star that belong to the question. Mix up the order and the sentence lands in the wrong palace. A position memorised from one board does not transfer to the next hour.
Leading the board is not a patron or a command
Traditionally the lead star is the star you look at first, and the lead door is the door you look at first. First means a reading order. It does not mean the star will come to help, and it does not mean the door orders you to act now. The symbols tied to the question are found after these two are located.
Locate the two, then write the question
Illustration: the lead star is in Kan, and the lead door, Open, is in Li. Write those two sentences first. Then write where the question’s symbols sit, and how far they are from the lead star and the lead door. It is not “the lead star is in Kan, so a patron is in the north.” A direction is a cell, not a person’s address. It is also not an instruction for travel or medicine.
Common mistakes
- Calling the lead star a patron star.
- Turning the lead door into an order to act at once.
- Copying the previous board’s lead star onto this one.

Do the lead star and the lead door always share a palace?
No. The star and the door rotate on their own. Use the two cells this board prints.
Can I read without finding the lead star?
Find it first. The lead star and lead door are the start of this board. Without that start, later doors and stars land in the wrong cell.
Is the lead door always the same one of the eight?
No. Which door leads changes with the board.
