Choosing another lens
The same three cards can be read through a lens you chose in advance, such as theme, obstacle, and next step. A lens is a job assigned to each position. It is not a fourth card, and it is not a camera.

Declare the lens before the draw
After the declaration, left, middle, and right are no longer automatically background, focus, and direction. They are the three jobs you named. The faces stay. What changes is the work each card does in the sentence. With no declaration, return to the default three-card line. Do not add a more convenient lens after the reading.
A new lens is not a new shuffle of the same cards
One line serves the one lens declared before the draw. A different lens means another draw and another declaration. The lens still makes one sentence from three cards. It cannot turn the cards into a medical, legal, or financial decision, and “next step” is not an order that must be carried out.
Theme, obstacle, next step
Illustration: before the draw you declare theme, obstacle, and next step. The cards are House, Mountain, and Key. You can say: the theme sits with the home or what it holds, the obstacle is a steep thing to cross, the next step is finding what opens it. That is one sentence under the declared jobs. It is not “you must move house,” and it is not “the key is already in a named person’s hand.” A lens is not a fourth card.

Can the lens and the default line be used at once?
One draw uses one declaration. The default line and a chosen lens are two declarations. Mixing them gives one card two jobs.
Can I invent a lens?
Yes, if you state before the draw what each of the three positions does, and the three positions still make one sentence.
Can a lens turn a difficult card into an easy one?
No. The lens does not change the faces. It only changes the job of each position. The image remains the image.
